Sikasil® SG-20 is ideal for bonding structural glazing and other bonding applications where high mechanical performance is required. This product is suitable only for experienced professional users. Tests must be conducted with substrates and real conditions to ensure adhesion and compatibility of materials.
Surface Preparation
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from any traces of grease, oil, and dust. The surface treatment depends on the specific nature of the substrates and is essential for a lasting bond.
Application
The optimal temperature for substrate and sealant is between 15 °C and 25 °C. Sikasil® SG-20 can be extruded with manual, pneumatic, or electric guns, as well as with pumping systems. For advice on selecting and installing a suitable pumping system, contact the Sika Industry Engineering department. Joints must be properly sized.
The basis for calculating the necessary joint dimensions is the technical values of the adhesive and adjacent building materials, the exposure of the structural elements, their construction and size, as well as external loads.
Joints deeper than 15 mm should be avoided.
Tooling and Finishing
Tooling and finishing must be carried out within the skin formation time of the sealant or adhesive. When Sikasil® SG-20 is applied, press the adhesive against the sides of the joints to achieve good wetting of the bonding surface. Do not use finishing agents.
Removal
Uncured Sikasil® SG-20 can be removed from tools and equipment with Sika® Remover-208 or another suitable solvent. Once cured, the material can only be removed mechanically.
Hands and exposed skin must be washed immediately using wipes such as Sika® Cleaner-350H cleaning cloths or a suitable industrial hand cleaner and water. Do not use solvents on the skin!
Overpainting
Sikasil® SG-20 cannot be painted.
Application Limitations
The solutions recommended by Sika for bonding structural glass and windows are generally compatible with each other. These solutions consist of products such as the Sikasil® SG, IG, WS, and WT series. For specific information on compatibility between various Sikasil® products and other Sika products, contact the Sika Industry Technical Office. To exclude materials that may affect Sikasil® SG-20, all materials such as gaskets, tapes, fixing blocks, sealants, etc., in direct and indirect contact, must be pre-approved by Sika. Where two or more different reactive sealants are used, allow the first to fully cure before applying the next. The aforementioned Sika process materials can be used in structural glazing or window bonding applications only after a detailed examination and written approval of the corresponding project details by Sika Industry.
