IBS Helicestop Primer is a fast-drying, single-component marine primer based on modified epoxy resin, designed to promote direct adhesion on the main metals used in marine environments.
It is particularly suitable as an anchoring primer for boat propellers, sterndrives, shafts, and flaps, and serves as the specific base coat for the subsequent application of IBS Helicestop A.F. antifouling.
Thanks to its formulation, Helicestop Primer adheres directly to properly prepared metal surfaces such as brass, aluminum, bronze, and stainless steel. It can also be used on other metal items intended for marine and boating environments.
The product can be overcoated with both single-component and two-component products, providing an effective adhesion base for the subsequent layers of the protective system.
Its fast drying speeds up maintenance work: at +25°C it is dust-free in about 10-15 minutes and touch dry in about 30-45 minutes.
Helicestop Primer can be applied by brush, roller, or conventional spray.
The product is available in a 250 ml format, particularly practical for treating propellers, shafts, flaps, sterndrives, and other metal components of the boat.

On steel: where possible, blast the surface to at least Sa 2.5 according to ISO 8501/1. Alternatively, completely remove rust and mill scale and roughen the surface using a wire brush or abrasive disc. Thoroughly remove dust and immediately apply Helicestop Primer.
On other metal alloys and galvanized sheet metal: roughen the surface using an abrasive disc or medium-coarse P80-P100 abrasive paper. Carefully remove all dust and immediately apply the primer.
On special surfaces, a preliminary adhesion test is recommended.
Mix IBS Helicestop Primer thoroughly before use and again after any thinning.
The product can be applied with:
Brush
Roller
Conventional spray
Thinning
Thin approximately 5% to 15% with IBS Diluente NA23. Different percentages may be required depending on the required thickness and the application system.
For cleaning equipment, use Diluente NA23.
Drying and overcoating
At +25°C:
Dust-free: approx. 10-15 minutes
Touch dry: approx. 30-45 minutes
Deep dry: approx. 24-36 hours
At +20°C, overcoat after approx. 4-5 hours and in any case within a maximum of 12 hours.
The recommended typical thickness is about 40 µm dry per coat, corresponding to about 200 µm wet film.
The theoretical coverage is about 5 m²/l at a dry thickness of 40 µm.
The ambient temperature during application must be between +5°C and +35°C. The substrate temperature must be between +5°C and +40°C and in any case kept at least 3-5°C above the dew point.
For the complete protection cycle of propellers and immersed components, overcoat IBS Helicestop Primer with the specific antifouling IBS Helicestop A.F., observing the indicated times.
