Painting with a spray can is a practical and quick solution, accessible to everyone. To achieve a truly professional result, it is necessary to know some fundamental rules:
- preparation,
- ideal distance,
- technique,
- how to avoid drips.
Surface preparation
A good paint job always starts with preparing the surface. A dirty, greasy, or shiny surface can completely compromise the finish. Our tips:
- use a silicone-free degreaser to remove oils, grease, and contaminants.
- roughen the surface with fine abrasives (P600–P800) to improve adhesion.
- remove dust and residues with a lint-free cloth.
- use a specific spray primer (which you will choose based on the type of surface you will paint, especially if you need to paint plastic, metal, or difficult surfaces), it ensures bonding, uniformity, and durability.
The quality of preparation affects over 70% of the final result.
Ideal spraying distance
The ideal distance to achieve an optimal result is between 20 and 30 centimeters.
- under 20 cm → very high risk of drips
- over 30 cm → dry spray, poor coverage, and rough finish
Always keep the can parallel to the surface and do not move your hand closer or farther during the pass.
Spraying technique
The spraying technique is fundamental to achieve a uniform finish:
- start spraying off the surface, then cross the object
- keep linear movements: first horizontal, then vertical
- never stop in one spot
- overlap each pass by 30% to avoid gaps
- shake the can for at least 1 minute before use and periodically during work.
How to avoid drips
Drips are the most common mistake when using a spray can. The secret to avoiding them is not to seek full coverage on the first pass:
- first very light layer: a uniform “dusting”
- wait 3–5 minutes
- second more covering layer, still thin
- third layer only if necessary
For complex surfaces (corners, curves, reliefs), keep a constant distance and work in several short passes.
Ideal environmental conditions
Environmental conditions greatly influence the final result; the optimal ones to achieve a perfect result are:
- temperature: ideally between 15–25°C
- humidity: low
- environment: no wind, dust, or drafts
- avoid: direct sunlight and hot surfaces
These conditions ensure a smoother surface and a more durable finish.
Clear spray
To achieve a professional and durable finish, especially outdoors, apply a clear spray. The surface will have greater resistance to scratches and wear, better UV protection, extra shine or a matte effect, and longer durability of the entire paint cycle
