Usage of fiberglass fabric:

There glass fiber it is a medium weight fabric (300 gr / m2) composed of glass fiber threads suitably arranged in a homogeneous way and with a random orientation, comparable to felt.
The fiberglass mat it is formed by a high wettability with the polyester resin and represents the most widely used reinforcement system for hand layering in the open mold technique.
For these characteristics the fiberglass mat it is an ideal product for making casts and fiberglass artefacts, even very complex ones, to carry out repairs on different materials, for the construction of artefacts for the nautical sector and for fiberglass constructions in general.

How fiberglass is applied

A fiberglass cast is created and we begin with the preparation of the model of which we will examine, take the cast which must then be smooth, clean and possibly degreased with isopropyl alcohol.
Subsequently it will be necessary to carefully treat the model with a release wax, to prevent it from adhering to the fiberglass cast. It is also advisable to spread a thin layer of polyvinyl alcohol on the model, to ensure an even easier demoulding and to prevent the release wax film from transferring onto the demoulded piece which can then be painted without any adhesion problem.
After completing the release treatment on the model, we will move on to the actual creation of the cast which will begin with the application on the model of a coat of brush gelcoat (or spray gelcoat) which we will leave to dry for 12 hours.
At this point you can start with the brush application of a coat of polyester resin , on which we will spread patches of fiberglass mat . Then you have to impregnate everything with a new coat of polyester resin taking care to exert slight pressure to eliminate any air bubbles that have formed in the composite. For its correct impregnation, approximately 600 grams of resin are required for each square meter of mat used, thus obtaining a thickness of approximately 0.6 mm.
The high wettability of the mat, accompanied by a low weight, allow the composite to take the mold of all the details of the model. After 12 hours you can repeat the layering of fiberglass mat to increase the thickness of the cast.

Once the lamination of the cast is completed, the fiberglass cast is detached. It is therefore advisable to leave it in shape for 24 hours, after which it will be possible to unmold the fiberglass cast from the model. It begins by exerting a slight pressure on the edges of the cast until reaching the central part of the same. To facilitate the detachment, it will be possible to use hot water which will dissolve the polyvinyl alcohol film. After detachment it will be necessary to finish the edges of the cast with abrasive paper following the profile of the gelcoat.

To reproduce the fiberglass model, we start with the reproduction of the model, using the (negative) cast that has just been obtained, which we will carefully treat with three coats of release wax and an additional layer of polyvinyl alcohol (same release treatment used for the creation of the cast).
Once the detaching treatment on the cast has been completed, we will proceed with the application of two coats of gelcoat at intervals of 12 hours one from the other. After 12 hours from the last coat of gelcoat, we will apply a coat of polyester resin on which we will place pieces of fiberglass mat of the appropriate size. When laying the pieces of glass fiber mat it is recommended to exert a good pressure to ensure correct adhesion of the mat to the cast and the complete elimination of bubbles formed in the composite. Now impregnate everything with a new coat of polyester resin, exerting a slight pressure as usual, but this time layered with pieces of fiberglass mat. For correct impregnation, approximately 500 gr of resin will be required for each square meter of mat used, thus obtaining a thickness of approximately 0.5 mm.
If it is necessary to increase the thickness and mechanical resistance of the product, it will be possible to repeat the layering of the mat and / or the fiberglass mat for another 2 times at a distance of 12 hours from each other, using the same procedure above. described.
After 24 hours from the last coat of polyester resin, it will be possible to proceed with the demoulding of the fiberglass model (as described above), finish the edges following the gelcoat profiles, fill any imperfections with fiberglass filler and sand with abrasive paper. .
